When it comes to issues within the healthcare industry, much of media tends to focus on the growing demands placed on healthcare as a result of retiring Baby Boomers. However, not enough attention is provided to the latest crisis to hit the world of U.S. health – the growing crisis currently occurring in VA hospitals.
Towards the end of 2015, a damning report for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs revealed that there was a significant leadership crisis occurring within the VA hospital system, which currently serves over nine million veterans. This report revealed that many veterans are underserved by VA healthcare systems; some examples demonstrated that delayed care directly led to the deaths of some patients.
Much of the growing crisis in VA hospitals and facilities can come down to a lack of required resources to keep up with demand. It’s estimated that almost half of all 21 million U.S. veterans require care upon returning from combat; many of these veterans require more nuanced and involved care due to post-traumatic stress disorder, loss of limbs, and traumatic brain injury. That means VA hospitals are experiencing a growing demand for better care, all while struggling to do more on fewer resources.
One problem currently exacerbating the growing crisis in VA hospitals is the lack of up-to-date equipment, which considerably slows down both workflow and the ability of healthcare professionals to communicate with each other across facilities. For that reason, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing an increased budget for the 2017 year, which should aim to reduce the obstacles put in place with outdated and/or clunky healthcare equipment.
